Pure Flow 2.0 by Katy Connor

permanent_PureFlow2.0_crop

Brighton arts organization, Permanent Gallery are presenting two artist’s projects during the festival. Pure Flow 2.0 by artist, Katy Connor is a large-scale projection in the Permanent Gallery window and a smartphone app, both launched for the first time at Brighton Digital Festival. The projection reveals invisible data-streams running between a Global Positioning System [GPS] device and multiple satellites that triangulate its position. Live, moving imagery is generated from fluctuations in this data, revealing the noise in the signal, the system’s instability. As a Smartphone App Pure Flow 2.0 enables the user to directly touch these signals, creating visual and sonic patterns that respond to their environment and movement in space.

Pure Flow 2.0 is supported by Arts Council England and University of Lincoln. Made in collaboration with Dr Duncan Rowland.

Solar Systems by Semiconductor

black_rain_web

Solar Systems is Semiconductor’s first major exhibition in the South East for four years. Three moving image installations explore the mechanics of observing the Sun, from the vantage point of the Earth to our orbit in outer space. The works, Black Rain, Heliocentric, and Out of the Light, are emblematic of the artists’ ongoing investigation of the natural world, which has resulted in major works on astronomy (Brilliant Noise, 2006), and geology (Worlds in the Making, 2011). Their unique approach has won them fellowships and residencies in significant scientific locations such as NASA’s Space Sciences Lab, the Galapagos Islands and the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History.

Exhibition Preview: Friday 2 September, 6-8pm

Solar Systems is curated by Lighthouse in partnership with Phoenix Brighton.

Thomas Truax with the Hornicator and Mother Superior

For one night only, The Brunswick will be hosting an evening of music incorporating one-off machines, built from remnants of the analogue and digital ages.

See Thomas Truax’ Mother Superior, an exquisite drum machine which uses a spinning bicycle wheel as a rhythm generator and Spacedog’s ventriloquial side-kick Hugo, an eerie robotic dummy head, rescued from the attic of a dead magician.

Hear Jane Bom-Bane as she sings at the harmonium in her intricate, mechanical hats and join in with the sawchestra as they create a live soundtrack to a classic silent film. There will be music throughout the evening, in the dedicated music room and breaking into the bar. Stay tuned for news of other acts.

Brave New World

Brave New World-web

As part of the Brighton Digital Festival, Fabrica is holding a series of three discussion evenings during September. Each with a different theme they will add up to an in-depth look at how social media and the digital space is changing the arts landscape. From artists taking their first steps and learning how to manage their online reputation, to those using the digital space to make work and invite creative participation, to the forces that will reshape arts organisations, challenging elitism and encouraging a diversity of voices into the arts.

Built into each session will be the opportunity to take part in the discussion. There are no experts here – speakers will be those working in this area including artists – we are all still learning and will continue to learn how to negotiate this new, exciting and ever-changing landscape. There will be the opportunity to spend some time networking after each event.

All events are free but booking is recommended – please contact office@fabrica.org.uk or call 01273 778646

BrightonSEO

brighton_seo1

BrightonSEO has grown from a few people gathering for beers in a pub to one of the UK’s most popular search marketing conferences. This one-day event brings together industry professionals from iCrossing, FHM, Leapfrogg and SiteVisibility to share advice for better performance in Google. The event’s aim has always been to highlight that the city is a hotbed for SEO talent, and provide a ‘Brightonian’ spin on the search marketing conference and networking event. When the last BrightonSEO event sold out in less than ninety minutes we knew we’d done a pretty good job building our reputation as one of the best search marketing events in the UK. The fact that it’s free and held on a Friday afternoon in Brighton doesn’t hurt either.

Digital Open Studios Week

DigitalOpenStudios3

Wired Sussex has got together with many of Brighton’s digital agencies to organise a week when they will open their studios to the world. Agencies participating in Digital Open Studios Week will fling open their doors to potential employees, interested freelancers, and would-be and actual clients alike.  There’s nothing like seeing behind the curtain to help demystify what digital agencies actually do, where they do it, who does what and how teams actually work together. For agencies, it offers a chance to show off where, how and with whom they go about their day-to-day business.  There will be talks, workshops and plenty of opportunity for a bit of old-fashioned nosing.  Interested agencies should get in touch with Wired Sussex to find out how to take part; interested viewers can make sure they are kept up-to-date once viewing appointments are open.

Digital Coast

A_New_Direction_Create_Jobs_1

With a confident and growing digital sector in Brighton, the city’s digital future seems assured. Brighton’s reputation as a cultural hotspot means employers can reach out to a university educated global talent pool to expand capacity. But where does this leave local young people facing increased barriers to higher or further education and employment?

By bringing together employers, sector development agencies, educators and others with an interest in ensuring Brighton produces the talent that can keep the digital sector strong, Digital Coast will explore the need for a joined up approach to getting Brighton young people into Brighton digital jobs. Starting with a case study about Create Jobs in East London, we will ask if there is a need to ensure local young people get increased access to local jobs or should the digital sector be left to its own devices?

Insight: Digital Dimensions

insight_web

Illustrated talk and discussion. John Clive has been using computers to create images since the early eighties, and he soon realized that digital was not just a new set of tools for creating artworks but a new medium – with its own aesthetic. Just as the discoveries of optics changed the perception and portrayal of reality in the 16th and 17th centuries so digital technology offers new dimensions of artistic expression for the 20th and 21st. John will present his personal view on the opportunities and challenges the new medium presents to visual artists.

26 September 6pm (doors open 5:30 for drinks).
